    Book details

If we are serious about finding a different way to run the post-credit crunch society, we must start by introducing alternatives to undergraduates. Kieran Allen begins the task with an accessible and comprehensive look at the ideas of Karl Marx. Dispensing with the dryness of traditional explanations of Marx, Allen shows how Marx's ideas apply to modern society. The first section briefly outlines Marx's life and the development of his work, then goes on to clearly explain his key theories, including historical materialism and surplus value. The second section examines alternatives to capitalism, the concept of 'anti-capitalism' and provides concrete, contemporary examples of Marx's theories being put into practice in today's world. This book provides a crucial alternative for undergraduates in sociology and politics.

Kieran Allen is a sociology lecturer at University College Dublin. His books include Max Weber: A Critical Introduction (Pluto, 2004) as well as a number of works on Irish society and politics.

Allen has written a very clear account of Marxism as it applies to the 21st century. His explanation of how Marx's tendency of the falling rate of profit and how it applies to the modern crisis is particularly impressive.Allen also gives a very enlightening framework for thinking about a post capitalist world based upon a combination of workers control, pulic ownership of the major sectors of the economy and decentralised planning. In it's own way this book is a modern update of the 'Communist Manifesto' of Marx and Engels. It is an excellent accessible introduction to Marxism.

I bought this book for a Sociology course I have undertaken. Before reading it I had wondered if it would be a very heavy and difficult read, the opposite is true. Anybody could pick up this book and read it and find it interesting, it uses very clear language and explains the concepts within very cleary. Highly Recommend.

It has 'locations', not page numbers. Other than that, the content is enjoyable to read and informative.
